Last July 21, at the 2016 International AIDS Conference in Durban, the NGO delegates had a talk session with members of the civil society at the Global Village. Moderated by Morten Using (Chief of Governance and Multilateral Affairs at UNAIDS), the speakers included Jan Beagle (Deputy Executive Director at UNAIDS) and four NGO delegates (Lumumba Musah, Angeline Chiwetani, Simran Shaikh, and Trevor Stratton). The delegates shared their experiences and some perspectives around their work for the Programme Coordinating Board (PCB). They also discussed with the audience how to improve the NGO delegation’s communication with the larger civil society.
Last July 18, the NGO delegates had an informal meet up session with around 150 individuals from civil society organisations at the Global Village of the 2016 International AIDS Conference in Durban. Five members of the delegation were present and spoke about their work at the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board (PCB), the challenges in engaging with PCB member states, as well as upcoming activities such as the NGO Report and the recruitment of new delegates. Members of the audience expressed their interest to be part of the mailing list of the delegation and to engage with the delegates on common advocacy agenda.
Erika Castellanos, representing Latin America and the Caribbean in the NGO Delegation to the UNAIDS PCB, gave an intervention at the side event “Leaving no one behind: the rights and health of key and vulnerable populations” last 09 June 2016. In the ongoing negotiations on the draft Political Declaration of the June 2016 High Level Meeting (HLM) on HIV/AIDS, several issues have been identified to be contentious. These include: sexual and reproductive health and rights; comprehensive sexuality education; key populations; harm reduction; intellectual property, trade, and access; and, HIV financing. This document presents the perspective of the NGO Delegation to the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board (PCB) on these issues, as well as relevant Decision Points (DPs) agreed on in previous meetings by the PCB.
