4.0 Support mechanisms for African States
Intervention from the NGO Delegate for Africa (pdf)
The NGO Delegation recognizes the critical importance of the meaningful engagement of representatives from Africa – as the region hardest hit by the epidemic – through member states and NGO representatives from Africa on the PCB.
Therefore, we are encouraged to note the efforts of the UNAIDS Secretariat and the African member states to enhance consultation and networking among African states to improve their meaningful participation in the PCB as this, together with strong NGO representatives from Africa, will enhance the voice of Africa in UNAIDS policy and governance.
We note that the challenges faced by the Africa group in participating meaningfully in UNAIDS governance, including resource limitations and language, are ones shared by the NGO Delegation and other members of the PCB. Therefore, we continue to encourage the UNAIDS Secretariat to translate all board documents and distribute them at least eight weeks in advance.
In particular, we look forward to watching the role of the Regional Support Advisors strengthened to enhance the support offered to African member states on the board, in particular updating/briefing both the capitals and missions in Geneva on board issues and enhancing their involvement in the PCB dialogue.
Thank you Madame Chair.
