The Medicines Patent Pool, initiated by UNITAID with support from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), has launched an open access database on existing patents for antiretroviral (ARV) drugs.
Information on patents and their legal status has been difficult to obtain by public health and non-profit organizations. This database offers the comprehensive data needed to increase access to medicines in developing countries by offering country-to-country patent information and encouraging voluntary licensing. The Pool hopes the information offered will help to increase competition and innovation, thus bringing down the price of treatment.
The database contains information on: who holds the patent; reference numbers for patent applications; expected dates of patent expiration; and in which countries the patents have been filed for, granted, withdrawn or do not apply.
